How to make decisions

Do you find it hard to make decisions?

Some decisions are harder than others. It depends upon the risk that is involved. A decision as to what to order on a menu is much different from whether to have a surgery or not.

Most common in our everyday decision-making are the low to medium risks. Should you spend the money? Should you go on that trip? Should you quit your job?

Here are some tips that may help you make decisions:

  • Weigh out the pros and cons. Make a list by writing down the advantages on one side and the disadvantages on the other. Which side is longer? By writing it down you will be able to see which decision would be best for you.
  • Sit down and think about what is the underlying reason for you to doubt any decision. For example, sometimes we use the excuse that there is not enough money when the real reason deep down is that you are scared. If you are willing to let go of the fear it may help you make that decision. What thoughts do you have that could be excuses in disguise?
  • Try not to be influenced by what other people want you to do. You may make your decision just to please others. Listen to your own intuition. What do YOU really want?
  • Go with your gut feeling. Try to meditate or sit quietly without distractions. Ask the question in your mind and then let it go. Empty your mind completely. Then see if any answer pops into your head. Sometimes it will come to you the next day or week.
  • It may help to think that neither decision is wrong. Each decision will just lead to different experiences. Then just make your choice and stick with it.

I picked up this greeting card from a store once when I was debating whether or not to take a trip. Its words resonated with me. Here is part of the card:

“Relax….no matter what, everything is okay. If you go, then enjoy it. If you stay, that’s cool, enjoy that. If this happens, enjoy it. If that happens, then enjoy that also. The problem arises when you beat yourself up for staying instead of going, or wanting this to happen instead of that. Go with the flow and just enjoy the ride. “

I have found that it is more difficult to make decisions on issues in my personal life. At your work life (especially if you are in a job)decisions are much easier. I am a restaurant manager and I am expected to follow the policies and procedures laid out by the corporation and lead my team in the same way. However, when it comes to making decisions outside of work, weighing your personal beliefs and values against what you are about to do makes things a bit easier. I love the quote at the end of your post. It basically is telling you to not have regrets, be okay with what happens, even if you did not end up where you wanted to be.
